The Options Clearing Corporation (OCC®) is the world’s largest equity derivatives clearing organization. Founded in 1973, OCC is dedicated to promoting stability and market integrity by delivering clearing and settlement services for options, futures and securities lending transactions. As a Systemically Important Financial Market Utility (SIFMU), OCC operates under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), and the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. OCC has more than 100 Clearing Members and provides central counterparty (CCP) clearing and settlement services to 21 exchanges and trading platforms. OCC also provides free and engaging educational resources about the benefits and risks of options through its Options Industry Council (OIC). CBOE Clearing Corporation, the predecessor to OCC, is founded.
1974-1978
SEC approves transforming CBOE Clearing Corporation into The Options Clearing Corporation (OCC), an industry clearinghouse for all U.S. equity options. Trading in put options begins. OCC introduces Exercise by Exception to streamline expiration processing.
1979-1986
Trading in cash-settled index options begins. The first version of "Characteristics and Risks of Standardized Options," also known as the Options Disclosure Document (ODD), is developed, OCC pioneers the use of cross-margining.
1987-1993
OCC launches INTRACS system for clearing and settlement which provides enhanced assignment and position processing. OCC collaborates with the industry exchanges to form Options Industry Council (OIC). OCC introduces Stock Loan/Hedge Program.
