Extended Trading Hours (ETH) Rules & Procedures
Rule 402 of OCC's Rules provides that products executed on an Exchange outside of regular trading hours, as determined by OCC, are subject to OCC’s established extended trading hours (ETH) risk management procedures, and that OCC determines whether the risk of a product proposed for ETH can be managed under those procedures. A general overview of those procedures is provided below and in the attached ETH Procedure.
ETH-Eligible Products and Symbols (XLS)
As of October 19th, 2026
OCC evaluates new ETH products and trading sessions through its new product review process and will issue an Information Memo whenever products are added to or removed from the list.
ETH Risk Management
Clearing members must be approved by OCC before clearing ETH activity. Approval requires an OCC assessment of the clearing member's financial condition, operational readiness, and risk profile, along with operational and risk contacts available during ETH. Approved clearing members are also subject to an ETH margin add-on equal to the lesser of $10 million or 10% of net capital. OCC may revoke ETH authorization under OCC Rule 307B(a)(5). OCC monitors credit risk in clearing member accounts throughout ETH sessions, through the start of regular trading hours, and escalates exceedances resulting from ETH trading activity. OCC may also issue a margin call at the start of regular trading hours when unrealized losses on new positions from ETH activity exceed 25% of the account’s total risk charges and the overall portfolio is also experiencing losses. ETH margin calls are subject to the $500,000 minimum that applies to intraday margin calls.
Not all Exchanges or products trade in every session. The ETH-Eligible Products and Symbols list identifies the clearing session(s) for each product. Sessions that overlap with or are contiguous to regular trading hours may be designated by OCC as regular trading hours rather than ETH.
